Format: 3000ml — equivalent to four standard bottles

The Wine

Daniel Bouland divides his southeast-facing Bellevue vineyard into two separate bottlings according to soil: Sable for the weathered granitic sand and Cailloux for the neighbouring stony parcel. Although separated by little more than a track, the two sites produce markedly different expressions of Morgon.

Sable comes from 40- to 50-year-old vines planted on a steep slope and grafted onto low-yielding Vialla rootstock, particularly well suited to sandy granite soils. Bouland’s traditional approach centres on natural whole-bunch fermentation, gentle extraction and minimal intervention.

The sandy terroir gives the broader and more immediately yielding of the two Bellevue wines. Dark cherry, blackberry and plum are layered with violet, coffee spice and granitic earth. The palate is generous and fluid, yet grounded by fine sandy tannins and the mineral drive that distinguishes serious Morgon.

Presented in a rare three-litre format, it will mature slowly and makes a brilliant centrepiece for the table or cellar.

Cellared Says

Bouland is one of the benchmark growers of Morgon, producing wines with the depth and longevity to make the old comparison between Cru Beaujolais and Burgundy feel entirely justified. Sable is the more supple and generous Bellevue bottling, but it still carries plenty of structure beneath the fruit.

The double-magnum format should develop beautifully. Decant if drinking young. Drink now–2038.

Reviews

“Aromas of baked black cherry pie, violet and a touch of coffee spice… the tight-knit, sandy tannins offer a sturdy structuring.”
91 points — Kenna Wells, The Wine Advocate

“Wide over the palate—super texture with a fluidity and modest sweetness… what a gorgeously delicious wine!”
Unscored — Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report
