Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 2020
Region: Burgundy
Sub Region: Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru, Côte de Nuits
Vineyard: Les Amoureuses
Variety: Pinot Noir
Country: France
Vintage: 2020
The Wine
Les Amoureuses is arguably Burgundy’s most celebrated Premier Cru—a vineyard whose position, reputation and prices place it alongside many recognised Grands Crus. Situated immediately below Musigny, its finest upper section is separated from the Grand Cru by little more than a narrow road.
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé owns just 0.56 hectares in this elevated sector. The vines, principally planted in 1964 and 1974, grow in coarse, stony topsoil over oolitic limestone and are traditionally ploughed by horse. Production is exceptionally small, typically amounting to approximately 160 cases per vintage.
The domaine describes Les Amoureuses as Musigny’s “little sister”: exquisitely refined and perfumed, but never lacking backbone. The concentrated 2020 vintage was also the final harvest vinified by François Millet, who guided the domaine’s cellar from 1986 until his retirement.
Black cherry, raspberry, blueberry and plum are layered with violet, rose, bergamot, sweet spice, cocoa and chalk. The palate is plush and silk-textured, yet driven by mineral tension, fine tannins and fresh acidity. It carries the richness of 2020 without losing the poise and aromatic detail that define this extraordinary site.
Cellared Says
Premier Cru by classification; Grand Cru by almost every other meaningful measure. De Vogüé’s tiny holding sits directly beneath Musigny and produces one of the rarest, most sensual wines in its portfolio.
The 2020 has serious concentration, but the site’s perfume, limestone tension and silken texture keep it beautifully composed. It is also the final vintage of the François Millet era, adding another layer of collector significance. Hold if possible, or decant carefully several hours before serving. Drink 2030–2055+.
Reviews
“A wine of surpassing elegance and marvellously hedonistic.”
96 points — Charles Curtis MW, Decanter
“Wonderfully heady and super-concentrated but feels in better balance than the Bonnes-Mares.”
94–97 points — Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“This sophisticated effort is terrific and a wine that should age effortlessly.”
93–96 points — Allen Meadows, Burghound
“Plush and luxuriant, with supple tannins, silky smooth… it’s sensual and pure.”
93 points — Neal Martin, Vinous
