The Wine

Clos Pompadour Blanc de Blancs is the flagship of Maison Pompadour, expressing the historic walled vineyard within the Pommery estate in Reims.

The Clos encompasses 25 hectares of vines, with a history dating to Henry Vasnier’s experimental planting in 1896. High walls create a sheltered, warmer microclimate, while the chalk beneath the vineyard provides the foundation for its distinctive mineral character.

This 2017 comes entirely from Chardonnay grown within the Clos. The vines derive from the historic Pompadour massal selection, preserving the vineyard’s inherited plant material and diversity. A portion of the wine is fermented in sandstone eggs, allowing individual lots to develop texture without introducing oak flavour.

Bottle age has brought a complex bouquet of toasted bread, buttery croissant, almond meal, spice and subtle dried fruit. Citrus and chalk remain central, while the palate combines delicacy with layers of flavour. The finish builds gradually, revealing the depth beneath its refined texture.

Presented in its gift box.

Cellared Says

An excellent discovery for Champagne drinkers who value vineyard identity, mature complexity and finesse. The combination of a historic Clos, pure Chardonnay and thoughtful cellar work gives it a clear sense of place. The reserve wines from magnum give this wonderful depth, whilst retaining the modern style. Fine, flinty, super long with a mineral edge that just asks for food or another glass, (in a large volume, proper wine glass).

Enjoy now–2031.

Reviews

“Medium yellow, bright in the glass with golden reflections. The bouquet is exceedingly complex, with toasted bread, buttery croissant, spice, almond meal and subtle dried fruit inflections. The wine is light and refined in the mouth, with great refinement, delicacy, subtlety and sneaky layers of complexity. The finish and aftertaste swell to a crescendo of flavour, seriously detailed and engaging. A most charming and beautiful champagne. The liqueur is just perceptible, contributing to the roundness and balance, the great drinkability of this wine.”
97 points — Huon Hooke, The Real Review

“The wine is juicy on the palate, developing a great arc of tension…”
97+ points — Falstaff

“A restrained champagne full of chalky minerality with white flowers…”
