Château Latour 1976
Region: Pauillac, Bordeaux
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon–dominant blend
Vintage: 1976
The Wine
Château Latour 1976 is a compelling expression of one of Bordeaux’s most iconic First Growths, viewed through the lens of maturity and restraint. Produced in a famously hot and dry vintage, the wines of 1976 emphasise structure, savoury complexity and classical proportion rather than sheer power.
Latour’s vineyard, L’Enclos, sits on deep gravel over clay — a terroir uniquely capable of carrying Cabernet Sauvignon through long ageing. In 1976, naturally low yields and thick skins delivered a wine of firm tannic backbone, which has softened beautifully over time. Decades in bottle have transformed this wine into a study of tertiary nuance: balance, poise and quiet authority.
This is not a blockbuster Latour, but a deeply intellectual one — offering insight into both the estate’s legendary terroir and the longevity of traditionally made Pauillac.
Cellared Says
A mature First Growth for the serious collector. Subtle, savoury and contemplative, this is Latour as history rather than spectacle — perfect for a milestone birthday, the big 5 0 in 2026.
NOTE: We’ve inspected this wine carefully, it comes from a private collection and has been professionally cellared. Label markings, glue discoloration, and the glass markings all point to a well cellared genuine bottle. Its in very good condition, capsule perfect, wine to just above base of neck. Please note our T&C’s on old bottles.
Wine Reviews
“Fully mature, with aromas of dried blackcurrant, cedarwood, tobacco and earth. Medium-bodied, resolved and elegant, with softened tannins and a lingering, savoury finish. A graceful old Latour.”
Wine Spectator – 92 Points
“A wine that shows the resilience of Latour’s terroir in a challenging vintage. Fully resolved now, offering tertiary complexity and classical Pauillac character.”
