The Wine

A Second Growth of the 1855 Classification, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou takes its name from the “beautiful pebbles” that define its vineyard. These deep Günzian gravel soils overlook the Gironde estuary, providing excellent drainage and reflecting warmth back towards the vines while the nearby water moderates seasonal extremes.

Following the monumental 2005, the 2006 vintage produced a more classically proportioned and initially reserved style of Left Bank Bordeaux. Ducru’s rigorous selection and Cabernet-dominant blend delivered one of Saint-Julien’s most structured and enduring wines of the year.

Composed of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, the wine matured for 18 months, largely in new French oak. With bottle age, its original cassis, blackberry and graphite have developed into tobacco, cedar, dried flowers, forest floor and savoury spice. The tannins remain present but have softened, revealing a composed, medium-to-full-bodied Ducru with fresh acidity and a long, mineral finish.

Cellared Says

This was released in Sep 2026 as part of the La Place releases, aged perfectly in the Chateau’s cellar, and not moved until we imported it (fully refrigerated of course, end to end). It was also recorked at the Chateau, guaranteeing its ready for another 20 years in bottle if that’s your thing. Sure, its a little price than some other options on the market, but this has perfect provenance and storage. It’s also bloody good. Tasted at Vin Expo back in April 2026. The 2006 is now firmly in its mature drinking window. It does not have the sheer richness of 2005, but it offers something increasingly compelling: classical proportions, unmistakable Saint-Julien restraint and the complexity that only time can provide. Drink now through 2045.

Reviews

“It’s a classically framed St Julien, full of dark cheer, a winter wine for nights by the fire…”
95 points — Jane Anson, Decanter

“Subtle aromas of currants, blueberries and minerals. Full body with super-integrated tannins and a fine, fine finish.”
95 points — James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com
