The Wine

Ultradition is the introduction to Aurélien Laherte’s range and a compelling expression of the vineyard diversity behind this celebrated grower estate. Eight parcels across the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay and Vallée de la Marne contribute to a blend led by Meunier, with Chardonnay supplying freshness and Pinot Noir adding structure.

Approximately 40% of the assemblage comes from reserve wines drawn from the preceding two vintages. These bring mature flavour and continuity while allowing each new base harvest to retain its personality.

Fermentation occurs naturally across several vessels, including seasoned barrels, foudres, concrete and large Rousseau tronconique casks. The wines remain on lees and undergo partial malolactic fermentation, developing texture while preserving acidity. Disgorgement is carried out by hand, with a restrained Extra Brut dosage.

Redcurrant, apple skin and pear meet citrus, white flowers, gentle spice and savoury mineral notes. The palate is juicy and finely textured, balancing Meunier’s generous fruit with bright acidity and a persistent saline finish. There is considerable complexity beneath its immediately inviting character.

Cellared Says

If you’re curious about grower Champagne, this is one I’d put in your hands first. I like the generosity Meunier brings here: plenty of fruit and personality, with enough savoury detail to keep you interested as the glass opens.

For me, Ultradition captures why Laherte deserves a place in the range. It’s accessible, thoughtfully made and delivers plenty for the money. A very easy personal recommendation.

Reviews

“The palate is lively, chiselled, punctuated by a slight bitterness on the finish.”
92 points — Gault & Millau

“Perfumed floral and spice notes give the Ultradition lovely brightness to match its mid-weight, notably vinous personality.”
90 points — Antonio Galloni, Vinous
