Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino 2021
Region: Tuscany
Sub Region: Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Variety: Sangiovese
Country: Italy
Vintage: 2021
The Wine
Castello Romitorio occupies the cooler, wooded north-western sector of Montalcino, where vineyards climb to approximately 480 metres. The elevation and forest influence moderate afternoon heat, producing Sangiovese with aromatic clarity, savoury detail and natural acidity rather than simple ripeness.
No Riserva was produced in 2021. Fruit from seven vineyard parcels—including material that might otherwise have been reserved for the estate’s top bottling—was channelled into the classic Brunello, giving this release unusual depth and breadth.
Fermentation takes place in cement, with skin contact lasting between 18 and 30 days depending on the parcel. The wine then spends 24 months in oak: approximately 90% in large traditional casks and 10% in previously used tonneaux. Production was limited to around 42,000 bottles.
The 2021 combines red and dark cherry with blue flowers, herbs, leather and iron. There is real power beneath the surface, but the cooler site and finely judged élevage keep the wine energetic and detailed.
Cellared Says
The decision not to make a Riserva makes this one of the most compelling Romitorio Brunellos in recent years. It carries more top-vineyard material than usual while retaining the freshness and savoury character of the estate’s cooler north-western sites. A serious buy for long-term Brunello cellars.
Reviews
“White pepper, blue flowers and grilled herb… open-knit yet powerful.”
96+ Points – Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
“Redcurrants, preserved cherries, incense, leather, anise and sage… nimble and fresh.”
