The Wine
Ovello is the spiritual and physical heart of Cantina del Pino. The family estate sits at the vineyard’s highest point, marked by the pine tree from which the winery takes its name, and the Vacca family’s holdings are concentrated across the hill.
The vineyard rises above the Tanaro River with predominantly south and south-west exposures. Limestone marl, silt and sandy veins combine with Ovello’s cooler, breezier position to produce Nebbiolo of fragrance, energy and pronounced tannic structure. The site can be severe when young, but its finest wines possess exceptional clarity and longevity.
For the 2021 vintage, Ovello was fermented in upright wooden vats with around 60 days or more on skins. Malolactic fermentation occurred in cask during the extended maceration, followed by approximately 24 months in large oak. This was the first vintage in which the cru moved from stainless steel to wooden fermenters, adding texture while retaining the vineyard’s lifted, mineral character.
The result is pale in colour but far from slight. Currant, dried cherry, orange peel, anise, juniper and alpine herbs emerge gradually, carried by finely coiled tannins and a long, stony finish. Where Albesani is broader and riper, Ovello is more linear, aromatic and driven by tension.

This is the wine that best explains Cantina del Pino. Ovello combines the perfume of Barbaresco with proper tannic authority, and the long maceration gives the 2021 an extra level of seriousness. It will need patience, but this is the most complete and distinctive wine in the range.
