By Farr Tout Près Pinot Noir 2024
Region: Geelong, Victoria
Sub Region: Bannockburn, Moorabool Valley
Vineyard: Tout Près
Variety: Pinot Noir
Country: Australia
Vintage: 2024
Style: Concentrated, savoury and structured red
The Wine
Tout Près is one of By Farr’s most distinctive vineyard expressions, a Pinot Noir shaped by close planting, demanding terrain and the intensity of its fruit. Planted in 2001 at approximately 7,300 vines per hectare, the vineyard takes its name from the proximity of the vines: tout près, or “very close”.
Three slopes bring together markedly different soils. Black volcanic earth over limestone, quartz gravel with red ironstone, and grey sandy loam create a complex growing environment within a small site. The close spacing makes vineyard work particularly demanding, with careful management essential to achieving the balance and concentration that define the wine.
The estate’s published method centres on whole-bunch fermentation with indigenous yeasts, followed by maturation in French oak from Allier. Tout Près has sufficient fruit intensity to accommodate 100% new oak, integrating that framework into its substantial tannin structure and long finish.
The wine’s signature combines dark cherry, earthy complexity, dried herbs and aromatic spice with considerable depth. The 2024 season’s concentration and poise suit this vineyard particularly well, bringing substance to a style whose individuality becomes increasingly apparent with air and bottle age. It occupies a special place within the Farr range for collectors drawn to Pinot Noir with presence and enduring structure.
Cellared Says
Tout Près is one I’d make room for in a collection. It has a strong identity and a proven place among Australia’s leading Pinot Noirs, and I like buying wines that can tell you something distinctive about their vineyard every time you open them.
I see real fine-wine value here. The investment in the vineyard, the care in the cellar and the character of the finished wine make a persuasive case for the price. I’d happily open a 2024 with a generous decant, although my preference would be to put several bottles away and enjoy them progressively over the next five to eight years. This is a wine worth getting to know over time.
