The Wine
GC Chardonnay is the Farr family’s tribute to Gary Charles Farr and the knowledge accumulated through decades of growing and making Chardonnay. Sourced from the close-planted Côte Vineyard, it represents a particularly ambitious expression of the estate’s landscape and sits among its most sought-after releases.
The exposed hillsides encompass several aspects and changing soils, including moisture-retaining loams and sections of black volcanic earth with fragmented limestone. These differences influence vine growth and ripening, giving the team distinct parcels from which to build the wine’s depth, texture and precision.
Hand-picked fruit is whole-bunch pressed, with the juice and retained solids transferred to French oak barrels for natural fermentation. The estate’s published approach uses approximately 50% new oak, with barrel maturation and lees contributing texture and complexity. The emphasis remains on the relationship between concentrated fruit, acidity and a persistent mineral finish.
The 2025 season brought rapid ripening and an intense harvest, while the Farr team also reported unusually high malic acidity in the fruit. That combination provides an important context for the release: generous flavour supported by freshness and definition. GC’s characteristic balance of substance and refinement gives it both immediate appeal and the framework for further development.
Cellared Says
GC is a Chardonnay I’d recommend when someone wants to put a genuinely important Australian white into their cellar. The family behind it, the quality of the vineyard and the care invested in the wine give it the standing I look for in a collectable bottle.
What appeals to me about 2025 is the opportunity to enjoy that quality relatively early. The warmer season brings an inviting generosity, yet there is still real structure and finesse. I’d be comfortable opening one on release and keeping others for the next five to seven years. For someone who collects top Chardonnay, I think GC makes a very strong case for a place alongside the best wines in the cellar.
