By Farr Chardonnay 2025
Region: Geelong, Victoria, Australia
Variety: Chardonnay
Vintage: 2025
The Wine
By Farr Chardonnay comes from the same site as Sangreal Pinot Noir, planted in 1994 on an exposed north-facing slope of red soil over limestone. The limestone sits just below the surface, running down into the root zone, giving the wine that classic Farr combination of depth, mineral drive and quiet power.
The fruit is hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, with all solids taken to barrel for natural fermentation. Around 30% new French oak is used, with a long, cool ferment, subtle lees stirring to encourage malolactic fermentation, and bottling after 11 months in barrel. It’s a very Farr expression of Chardonnay: layered and textural, but never broad or overworked.
Cellared Says
This is exactly why By Farr Chardonnay sits among the top tier of Australian Chardonnay. There’s richness here, but it’s tucked in beautifully — citrus, stone fruit, struck match, fine oak and that lovely saline/mineral line running underneath. It has the generosity you want from Geelong Chardonnay, but with enough tension and structure to keep it serious. Polished, quietly powerful and very complete. A cracking release.
