The Wine

La Mimbrera is an exceptionally scarce single-vineyard Rioja and a wine of particular importance to Exopto founder Tom Puyaubert. The half-hectare parcel was the first old-vine vineyard he purchased in Ábalos after establishing the project in 2003.

Located at approximately 450 metres in the El Hoyo sector, the vineyard combines clay-limestone soils with a strong Atlantic influence. It is planted predominantly to Tempranillo and Garnacha, with a small proportion of white Viura. The Garnacha vines are more than a century old, while the Tempranillo and Viura are approximately 70 to 80 years old. The organically cultivated vines are worked by mule.

The varieties were hand-picked and co-fermented with indigenous yeasts before 18 months’ maturation in a single used French oak barrel. The wine was bottled unfiltered, with only 500 bottles produced.

Wild blackberry and blueberry meet violet, pepper, Mediterranean herbs and chalk. Despite the warmth of 2019, the palate retains striking freshness, elongated fine-grained tannins and a long, limestone-driven finish.

Cellared Says

This is Rioja reduced to one tiny vineyard, one old barrel and just 500 bottles. The old vines and limestone give it depth without heaviness, while the inclusion of Garnacha and Viura brings perfume and lift to the Tempranillo framework.

Rare, distinctive and genuinely collectible, but far too delicious to treat only as an object. Drink now–2038.

Reviews

“Tangy and chalky on the palate with a medium to full body where the tannins snatch up the fresh blue fruit.”
94 points — James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com

“In this warm, dry and ripe vintage, the wine achieved 14.5% alcohol and kept good freshness.”
94 points — Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate
