The Wine

Benoît Moreau is one of Burgundy’s most intriguing vignerons, based in Chassagne-Montrachet and known for his meticulous vineyard work and hands-off winemaking. Farming biodynamically, Moreau believes the vineyard is the primary architect of quality, with minimal intervention in the cellar.

“La Cardeuse” is a premier cru site perched above the village with limestone-rich soils that lend both power and vibrancy to Chardonnay. Grapes are hand-harvested, native-yeast fermented and matured in a balanced mix of old and neutral oak. Lees stirring is subtle, emphasising energy and terroir clarity rather than overt oak richness.

Cellared Says

A radiant Burgundy with a crystalline core — white orchard fruits, citrus peel and wet stone segue into saline drive and fine phenolic tension. From the other end of Morgeot to Fairendes, La Cardeuse is another elevated site, rich in limestone with barely any topsoil. Planted by Moreau’s grandfather, Marcel, in the 1960s, these old vines were formerly part of the Domaine Bernard Moreau Morgeot bottling. They are now tressed and managed by horse, and produce an extremely mineral, ‘wow’ expression of Chassagne.

Wine Reviews

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet La Cardeuse 1er Cru comes from another parcel in Morgeot between two blocks of Pinot Noir. It has the most Zen-like bouquet amongst Benoît Moreau’s range, yet is compelling in terms of delineation and mineral intensity. The palate has exquisite balance with a perfect line of acidity, fresh and vibrant, with lovely texture towards the finish. Very sophisticated.
