The Wine

Finca El Otero is the leading single-vineyard wine of Bodegas Áster, La Rioja Alta’s estate in Ribera del Duero. It comes from a selected parcel at Anguix in Burgos, where poor soils and a continental climate provide the setting for a concentrated expression of Tinta del País, the region’s name for Tempranillo.

The wine is made only in exceptional vintages. In 2016, warm summer conditions and cool nights during the final ripening period produced healthy fruit with both volume and structure. The grapes were hand harvested on 17 October, with careful selection before fermentation.

After a cold pre-fermentation maceration and alcoholic fermentation, the wine completed malolactic fermentation in new French oak. Selected barrels then underwent sixteen months of ageing, with two traditional rackings, before bottling in May 2018.

Black cherry, plum and currant fruit are supported by liquorice, pepper, cedar, mocha and tobacco-like complexity. The wine combines the power associated with Ribera del Duero with polished tannins and a balancing sense of freshness.

Now a decade from harvest, the 2016 offers the interest of a mature vintage from an established estate. Tim Atkin MW awarded 96 points, praising its integrated oak, depth and surprising freshness.

Cellared Says

If La Rioja Alta’s 904 and 890 are familiar names in your cellar, Áster is a rewarding next step. Finca El Otero shows what that same group’s standards look like in Ribera del Duero: Tempranillo with a deeper, more muscular profile and French oak playing its part. I particularly like the opportunity here to buy a single-vineyard wine with a decade already behind it. This is where the concentration of Ribera can start to become more composed. A bottle to open over a long, unhurried dinner.
