The Wine

Founded in Healdsburg in 2001 by Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts, Arnot-Roberts has become an important voice in California’s exploration of distinctive vineyards and less familiar varieties. Its Vare Vineyard Ribolla Gialla joins that Californian outlook to one of northeastern Italy’s most individual white grapes.

The vineyard’s story begins with George and Elsa Vare, who planted Ribolla Gialla in 2001 using material from Josko Gravner’s vineyards in Friuli. The site lies at the foot of Mount Veeder in Napa’s Oak Knoll District, on deep, gravelly clay-loam soils. Dense planting, afternoon shade and the neighbouring wooded slopes help shape a wine of texture and freshness. The vineyard is farmed organically and is now known as Bengier Vineyard; this 2021 retains the Vare name.

The vintage combines orchard fruit, citrus pith, herbs, almond and floral detail with a distinctly savoury, mineral finish. It is a dry white with substance and an engaging saline edge, offering a different perspective on Napa Valley.

Just 125 cases were reported for the 2021 bottling. With several years since harvest, this is an appealing opportunity to explore the grape’s development, with Antonio Galloni’s published drinking window extending to 2029.

Cellared Says

Ribolla Gialla in Napa, from Gravner material, farmed by Steve Matthiasson and bottled by Arnot-Roberts. That is a fairly irresistible combination for the wine curious. What I like is how neatly it joins the Friuli story to California’s more adventurous side. There’s real interest beyond the unusual grape: texture, savoury detail and enough freshness to keep you coming back. Exactly the kind of small-production California I want in the range. Give it a proper wine glass and a little time to open. Actually do not buy this wine, I’d like to drink it.

Reviews

“Bold, punchy and savory, the Ribolla offers gorgeous complexity in its layered orchard fruit, herbs, almond and floral notes.”
93 Points — Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“Juicy and delicious with excellent acidity. Nicely balanced between savoury elements and fruit.”
17.5/20 — Alder Yarrow, JancisRobinson.com
