Wendouree Shiraz 1996
Region: Clare Valley
Sub Region: Clare
Variety: Shiraz
Country: Australia
Vintage: 1996
The Wine
Wendouree is one of Australia’s great traditional estates: founded in the nineteenth century, run by Tony and Lita Brady since 1974, and still revered for tiny releases from very old, dry-farmed Clare Valley vineyards. The estate’s original stone winery remains in use, the vineyard is planted largely to old-vine Shiraz and Bordeaux varieties, fruit is handpicked, and the winemaking remains deliberately traditional. Langton’s notes Wendouree’s exceptional standing in Australian fine wine, with the flagship Shiraz entering the Classification in 1996 and later rising to the top tier.
Cellared Says
Mature Wendouree is never about polish for polish’s sake. It is for drinkers who like detail, savoury structure and that unmistakable old-Clare authority that only the best bottles seem to deliver. A birthday wine classic.
Reviews
James Halliday — the publicly visible Halliday note describes a highly scented bouquet with earth and mint, then black cherry fruit through a powerful, tightly knit palate with “awesome tannins.”
