Sami-Odi Hoffmann Dallwitz Syrah 2019
Region: Barossa Valley
Sub Region: Ebenezer
Variety: Syrah
Country: Australia
Vintage: 2019
The Wine
The Hoffmann Dallwitz Syrah sits at the heart of the Sami-Odi story and is sourced from some of the oldest and most revered Shiraz vines in the Barossa Valley. The wine is drawn principally from the Hoffmann family's historic Ebenezer vineyard, including the famed DW-OLD planting dating from 1888–1912 and the ER-27 block planted in 1927.
Fraser McKinley's approach has become one of the most distinctive in Australian wine. Fruit is hand-harvested, fermented with a significant proportion of whole bunches and handled with extraordinary care throughout élevage. The wine spends an extended period in Burgundian oak pièces before bottling without fining, filtration or sparging, with gravity used wherever possible.
The 2019 vintage is regarded by many as one of the finest modern Barossa seasons. A warm but remarkably balanced growing season produced wines of concentration and intensity without sacrificing freshness or detail. In the Hoffmann vineyard, the old vines delivered fruit of exceptional depth, while the season's natural balance provided the precision and structure that underpin the very best Sami-Odi releases.
Production remains tiny by any measure, and every bottle reflects McKinley's relentless focus on vineyard expression rather than winemaking artefact. The result is a wine that somehow combines old-vine Barossa power with perfume, tension and remarkable finesse.
Cellared Says
There are very few Australian wines that create the sort of excitement Sami-Odi now commands, and the 2019 is a reminder of why. The old-vine fruit brings extraordinary depth, but what always surprises me is the freshness and detail. This is not a big Barossa red; it's a great wine that happens to come from the Barossa. One for the cellar, without question. Potentially the best release to date.
