Meadowbank Pinot Noir 2024 - Jimmy Watson Winner 2025
Region: Derwent Valley, Tasmania, Australia
Variety: Pinot Noir
Vintage: 2024
The Wine
Set high in Tasmania’s Derwent Valley, the estate vineyard at Meadowbank traces its roots to prime planting in 1987. The 2024 Pinot Noir draws from these mature vines, hand-harvested in multiple picks to preserve flavour layers. Fermented in open top vats, then matured for nine months in seasoned French oak (10% new), the wine shows vibrant cherry and wild strawberry aromas, subtle forest-floor and undergrowth character, and a hint of spice. On the palate it is smooth, silky and elegant, with a mouth-watering burst of freshness and an earthy minerality that speaks to the cold conditions and unique soils of Tasmania.
Cellared Says
This is not simply a Tasmanian Pinot—it’s one of the very best expressions of the variety from the island. Meadowbank 2024 combines fruit brightness with structural restraint, delivering cloth-fine tannins and a finish that lingers. Dr Edge does it again. Drink 2026–2032.
Wine Reviews
99 Points - Melbourne Royal Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for Best Young Red
James Halliday Trophy for Best Pinot Noir
"Another cracking Peter Dredge pinot noir from Gerald Ellis’ Meadowbank vineyard in the Derwent Valley. Light and bright in colour with fragrant aromas of red cherry, cranberry and raspberry fruits with a whiff of watermelon. Hints of exotic spice and twiggy complexity along with ginger cake, pressed wildflowers, dried meats, softly spoken oak and earth. Spacious with an inflow of amaro and dried citrus rind on the palate, finishing powdery in tannin with a slightly wild look in its eyes."
