La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva Viña Arana 2017
Region: Rioja, Spain
Sub-Region: Rioja Alta
Variety: Tempranillo (94%) and Graciano (6%)
Vintage: 2017
The Wine
A more contemporary expression of La Rioja Alta’s house style, Viña Arana Gran Reserva bridges tradition and modern freshness. The 2017 vintage comes from estate vineyards in Rodezno and Fuenmayor — old-vine Tempranillo complemented by Graciano for aromatic tension. After gentle destemming and fermentation, the wine spent three years in American oak barrels (produced in the bodega’s own cooperage) and a further three years in bottle before release.
A bouquet of ripe cherry, orange zest, tobacco leaf and sweet vanilla leads to a supple, finely etched palate — vibrant fruit, savoury nuance and long, elegant persistence.
Cellared Says
Where 904 is reflection, Arana is conversation — brighter, more immediate, yet grounded in Rioja Alta’s patient craft. The 2017 shows balance, fragrance and quiet confidence — a Grand Reserva for the modern collector. Don’t let the old school labels fool you, these are wines that are thoroughly modern, yet true to tradition. Hard to keep our hands off these. Drink 2024–2038.
