The Wine
Spätlese has always been one of the great sweet spots in the Joh. Jos. Prüm range. It retains the effortless lightness of Kabinett but comes from later-picked, riper fruit, adding another layer of concentration, texture and vineyard expression without moving into the richer territory of Auslese.
That distinction is particularly compelling in 2024. The cooler growing season and long October harvest allowed the estate to wait for ripeness without sacrificing acidity. Katharina Prüm describes the vintage through freshness, purity and minerality, and the Spätlese wines arguably express that balance better than any other Prädikat.
Wehlener Sonnenuhr itself is one of the Middle Mosel’s great Riesling sites: a dramatically steep south-west-facing slope of weathered Devonian slate rising directly above the river. Its combination of prolonged sunshine, heat-reflecting slate and the moderating influence of the Mosel produces Rieslings that marry ripe stone fruit with remarkable finesse and a persistent saline-mineral character.
Compared with the Kabinett, the 2024 Spätlese moves into deeper white peach, grapefruit, tangerine and bergamot, with a slightly creamier middle palate. Yet it remains beautifully light on its feet. At 8% alcohol, vibrant acidity and cool slate minerality keep the natural sweetness in check, leaving the finish fresh, savoury and mouthwatering rather than overtly sweet.

If I were choosing one Prädikat to explain why J.J. Prüm is so revered, Spätlese would probably be it. You get the delicacy and energy of Kabinett but with another gear of depth and persistence. The 2024 Wehlener Sonnenuhr is an exceptional balance of ripe fruit, sweetness, acidity and slate—a wine that is gorgeous now but really deserves time.
