The Wine

Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes is the flagship of Domaine Ponsot and one of the greatest red wines of Burgundy. Ponsot is the largest landholder within the historic 4.5-hectare core of Clos de la Roche — the original, centuries-old vineyard before the AOC was expanded in the 1950s to include multiple neighbouring climats.
These old-vine parcels average around 65 years of age and sit on some of the most profound terroir of the Côte de Nuits: white oolite limestone, thin topsoils, and fractured bedrock that forces vine roots deep into mineral layers.
Additional fruit comes from their vines in the Monts Luisants section (always historically part of Clos de la Roche), which adds cool mineral freshness to the sheer density of the old core.
Fermentation follows Ponsot’s philosophy of minimal intervention, gentle extraction, and no new oak. The 2022 was matured for 18 months in neutral barrels. Yields were tiny (23 hl/ha), contributing to the extraordinary concentration of the wine.

The result is a Grand Cru of immense presence yet remarkable precision — dark fruit, violets, earth, spice and crystalline tannins.

Cellared Says

One of the greatest red wines of Burgundy — powerful, precise, deeply mineral and endlessly complex. The 2022 is a masterpiece: vivid, tightly coiled and built for decades. A true benchmark Clos de la Roche. I was lucky enough to taste the 2022 and 2021 back to back (Nov 2025), and they are such beguiling wines, the ‘21 was quintessential Pinot, all brambly fruit, spice and rose petal edges. The ‘22 was amplified pretty much in everyway, especially in the mid palate, wild strawberry and forest floor notes only just emerging but promising so much more to come. A benchmark GC Burgundy of the very highest level. My wine of 2025.

Wine Reviews

“A bright, even purple. A slightly nutty note to the reticent bouquet. Then follows a vast volume of fruit, a density in a different league to the Chapelle. It absolutely swamps the palate with characteristic precision. Fresh feel to the finish; this could explode in complexity with time. Drink from 2035.”
Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy – 96–99 Points

“The finest bouquet from Ponsot this year: ebullient black cherries and violets, beautifully defined and flamboyant without losing terroir. Medium-bodied, tensile and energetic with finely knit tannins and a sorbet-fresh finish. A superb Clos de la Roche that should age with style.”
Neal Martin, Vinous – 95–97 Points
