Sold Out

Region: Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France
Variety: Pinot Noir
Vintage: 2005

The Wine

A benchmark Grand Cru from a cult producer in a vintage that set a modern standard for Burgundy.

The wine is drawn from parcels in the Grand Cru appellations of Charmes‑Chambertin and adjoining Mazoyères‑Chambertin. Rousseau’s holdings here include roughly 3.4 acres (≈1.37 ha) in those combined parcels.

The Charmes-/Mazoyères soils are described as limestone (notably Comblanchien limestone) with crinoid limestone on the upper slopes and gravel over limestone on some parcels.

Vines for Rousseau in this cuvée are mature — “more than forty years old” in some parcels.

The estate uses meticulous sorting of grapes upon arrival to the winery.

The 2005 Charmes-Chambertin by Rousseau is both sensual and profound: high-toned aromatics of black cherry, tea leaves and marzipan lead into layers of spice, sous-bois and chalky minerality. Rousseau’s masterful touch captures both purity and depth — a wine that distills Gevrey’s soul into silk and stone.

Cellared Says

A stunning Rousseau — profound and alive. It glides like satin and lingers like a memory. Drink 2026–2045, ideally with patience and Burgundy stems worthy of it.

Well cellared example. Wine well into neck, almost as at release, perfect capsule, no leaks evident. Front Label in good condition, very minor tear on left side. Excellent condition.

NOTE: T&C’s on second hand wines. Sold as seen.

Wine Reviews

“Rousseau’s 2005 Chambertin – assembled from four parcels, three of them in relatively cool, well-ventilated portions of this cru – offers high-toned aromas of plum distillate, tea and marzipan, but on the palate, chalk, raw beef, dried plum, bitter-sweet black fruits and roasted fennel flavors combine for a low-registered richness.”
