Cuilleron Cote Rotie 'Lieu-Dit La Vallière' Syrah 2022
Region: Northern Rhône
Sub Region: Côte-Rôtie
Variety: Syrah
Country: France
Vintage: 2022.
The Wine
La Vallière is one of Cuilleron’s flagship single-site Côte-Rôties and comes from a steep, south-facing hillside in the Vérenay sector, on the northern side of the appellation. It is a 100% Syrah cuvée from massale-selection vines rooted in mica schist, a site Cuilleron describes as a great cellar-worthy wine. Farming is meticulous, with high-density planting, no insecticides, minimal treatments and careful control of vigour and yields. In the cellar, the fruit is hand-picked, sorted, crushed and partially destemmed, before about three weeks of fermentation in open vats. The wine then completes élevage in barrique for 18 months, with annual production around 1,700 bottles.
Cellared Says
This looks the more serious, long-haul Côte-Rôtie of the two. It has the bones, the site and the élevage to justify patience, and it feels like the sort of bottle that will only get more compelling as the savoury, stony side comes to the fore.

Millesima described it as Cuilleron’s finest Côte-Rôtie in the 2022 vintage.
