The Wine
Classified as a Fourth Growth in the famous 1855 Classification, Château Branaire-Ducru has long been regarded as one of Saint-Julien’s most consistent and elegant estates. Located on deep Günzian gravel soils close to the Gironde Estuary, the vineyard enjoys exceptional drainage and a mesoclimate ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, which forms the backbone of the blend.
Since the arrival of Patrick Maroteaux in 1988, and now under the direction of François-Xavier Maroteaux, Branaire-Ducru has established a reputation for producing wines of refinement rather than sheer power. The estate's 60-hectare vineyard is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, with an average vine age approaching 35 years.
The 2010 vintage is widely recognised as one of the great modern Bordeaux harvests. A cool winter, dry summer and ideal harvest conditions delivered fruit of exceptional concentration, freshness and tannic structure. At Branaire-Ducru, careful vineyard selection and precision winemaking produced a wine that perfectly captures both the stature of the vintage and the elegance of Saint-Julien.
Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks before ageing in French oak barriques, approximately 60% new. More than a decade later, the wine is entering a superb stage of maturity, with the structure and balance to continue developing for many years to come.
Offered here in perfect condition, this is a textbook example of mature Left Bank Bordeaux from one of the strongest vintages of the last quarter century.
Cellared Says
Saint-Julien is often the sweet spot of Bordeaux, and Branaire-Ducru is one of the appellation’s great value propositions. The 2010 has all the hallmarks collectors seek: a benchmark vintage, impeccable provenance and a château that consistently punches above its classification. If you're looking for mature Bordeaux that is beginning to show its complexity while retaining decades of life ahead, this is a very compelling bottle. Recent tastings of 2016, 2009 and 2010 have all shone as one of the most consistent and slightly under the radar Chateau.
