Irrewarra Pinot Noir2025 From A Farr
Region: Victoria
Sub Region: Western Victoria (Irrewarra)
Variety: Pinot Noir
Country: Australia
Vintage: 2025
The Wine
The Irrewarra Pinot Noir comes from the same cool, windswept site near Colac, planted in 2001. The vineyard’s grey loam soils over limestone and ironstone, combined with the cooler, later-ripening conditions, deliver a very different expression of Pinot Noir to the Geelong sites—more aromatic, finer-boned and driven by natural acidity.
The fruit is hand-picked and fermented with a portion of whole bunches, depending on the season, with gentle extraction through pump-overs and plunging. Fermentation is wild, and the wine is then matured in French oak barriques (a modest percentage new) before bottling without fining or filtration.
As with the Chardonnay, the emphasis here is on site expression. Compared to the richer, more structured By Farr Pinot Noir wines, Irrewarra is more lifted and perfumed, with an emphasis on brightness, finesse and drinkability in youth, while still retaining the structure to develop over time.
Cellared Says
This is a very compelling style of Pinot. It has the perfume and immediacy that make it hard to resist young, but there’s enough structure and shape underneath to justify putting some away. A great example of how well Farr handles cooler sites.
Reviews
Reviews for the 2025 are not yet widely published, but the wine has a consistent critical track record.
Typical critic profile (prior vintages):
94–96 points, Halliday Wine Companion — fragrant, fine and structured Pinot with strong site definition.
93–95 points, The Wine Front — perfumed, savoury and finely structured, with excellent balance and length.
