Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023
Region: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône Valley, France
Variety: Grenache-led blend
Vintage: 2023
The Wine
Clos des Papes is one of Châteauneuf’s most complete estates, drawing fruit from over 30 parcels across all major soil types — galets roulés, limestone, sand and clay — giving natural balance and complexity. Old vines and organic farming underpin consistency year after year.
The 2023 vintage favoured freshness and definition over excess. A portion of whole-cluster fermentation adds aromatic lift, while ageing in large, neutral oak preserves purity. Red and dark berries, garrigue, dried herbs and spice flow across a structured yet supple palate, finishing long and poised.
Cellared Says
Always one of the strongest buys in Châteauneuf. Approachable young, but structured to cellar gracefully for 15–20 years. The ‘23 is lifted and aromatic, hard to resist now but worth a few years in cellar in you can.
Wine Reviews
Exquisite… wafting from the glass with a captivating bouquet of sweet red berries, iris, dark cherries, menthol, blood orange and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and textured, denser than usual, with a lovely, fleshy core of fruit… a strong candidate for wine of the vintage.
Yohan Castaing, The Wine Advocate, 99+ points
Ripe black fruits, cassis pastilles, liquorice, garrigue and herbal elements are all pushed forward… framed by smooth tannins, the full-bodied 2023 jumps at you right away, with gorgeous purity of fruit and lifting freshness.
Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous, 94–96 points
Deeply coloured and quite dark in character… generous, full-bodied, quite spicy and fairly potent, with lovely bright, sappy acidity and very fine, soft tannins.
