              Chateau d'Yquem 2003
Region: Sauternes, Bordeaux, France
Variety: Sémillon / Sauvignon Blanc
Vintage: 2003
The Wine
A monumental Sauternes from one of the most extreme Bordeaux vintages in memory. Despite the record heat, Château d’Yquem produced a wine of remarkable poise and longevity — a golden elixir layered with crème brûlée, honey, orange marmalade and toasted almonds. The noble-rot intensity is balanced by fresh acidity and a lingering citrus zest that defines great Yquem. A legend in the making and a reference point for how brilliance can emerge from adversity.
Cellared Says
Opulent yet controlled, the 2003 Yquem is an extraordinary statement of balance. Viscous, exotic and endlessly layered, it glides between richness and precision. Although in the sweet (pun intended) spot for drinking now, this will cellar confidently for decades.
From private collection. Temperature stored. Bottle condition excellent, wine to just above neck. Minor scuffs on front of bottle.
Wine Reviews
“The 2003 Yquem was a homogenous harvest picked over a single trie between 17 and 26 September. It has a rich and opulent nose of crème brûlée, marmalade and melted candle-wax aroma. The palate is concentrated and rich, for sure, but there is wonderful energy and freshness here, offering a decadently opulent finish.” — Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent, 97 pts
“The average June temperature for 2003 was the warmest ever recorded at Yquem since 1896… this notoriously hot vintage nonetheless produced some very pleasant Bordeaux surprises, Yquem being one of them.” — Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 96 pts
“Deep gold colour, intense botrytis; this is a massively rich Yquem with excellent freshness, delivering a decadently opulent finish.” — Decanter, 96 pts
